Wow. Dr Chris Reading (in Sydney in the 80s- 90s) used to talk about glutamates (naturally occurring chemicals in food) and I know I knew all about MSG by the time I was 8 or 9 as I was quite sensitive (a small amount made me sleepless, more made me vomit). Today I was searching Chris Kresser’s website looking for info on bone broth and I came across an interview with the Mission:Heirloom people in Berkeley, CA. This is their post on the subject with a great interview with Katherine Reid, PhD. who turns out to be a protein scientist who started looking at glutamates in foods after her daughter was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It turns out there is lots of research on glutamates in food and many disorders (she found 600,000 hits on Google Scholar)
